Canadian filmmaker Fawzia Mirza’s feature directorial debut, Me, My Mom & Sharmila, has set production for later this year in Nova Scotia and Pakistan.
Adapted from Mirza’s (pictured far left) stage play of the same name, the drama is produced by Jason Levangie and Marc Tetreault for Shut Up & Colour Pictures, and Andria Wilson Mirza for Baby Daal Productions. It’s executive produced by Damon D’Oliveira, with the support of Telefilm Canada and the Canada Media Fund in partnership with Crave and CBC Films.
Development of the project was supported by San Francisco’s SFFILM, Toronto International Film Festival’s (TIFF) Writers’ Studio and Filmmaker Lab, New York City’s The Gotham, Ontario Creates’ International Financing Forum, Inside Out’s Financing Forum, and the Canada Council for the Arts.
The film’s budget is still to be confirmed at this stage, Wilson Mirza tells Playback Daily, adding that they are in conversations with distributors and exploring opportunities for theatrical.
Written and directed by Mirza (Signature Move, The Syed Family Xmas Eve Game Night), Me, My Mom & Sharmila will star Amrit Kaur (pictured middle-left; The Sex Lives of College Girls) as the Canadian protagonist, who visits her parents’ homeland of Pakistan in 1999 to bury her father, played by Hamza Haq (pictured middle-right; Transplant). Nimra Bucha (pictured far right; Ms. Marvel) plays her conservative mother.
Mirza’s The Syed Family Xmas Eve Game Night made the shorts lineup on TIFF’s annual Top Ten list of best Canadian films last December. Mirza has also won an Audience Award for Best Short Film at the Inside Out Toronto 2SLGBTQ+ Film Festival in June 2021 for Noor and Layla.
