Netflix’s Vikings: Valhalla scored two nods for the Screen Composers Guild of Canada’s first-annual Canadian Screen Music Awards (CASMA), set for next month.
The historical drama, on which Toronto prodco Take 5 Productions did the post-production, is in the running for original main title theme music and original score for a series or limited series for Canadian composer Trevor Morris.
BYUtv and Family Channel series Ruby and the Well, produced by Toronto’s Shaftesbury, received a nomination for original main title theme music for Lora Bidner and Rob Carli, along with Peter Chapman for CBC Gem’s The Communist’s Daughter, produced by Loco Motion Pictures in association with Natalie Novak Films. Layal Watfeh has two nominations in that category — for Ambar 6 and The Journey.
Carli and Chapman also earned a nod for best original score for a series or limited series for CTV Sci-Fi’s Wynonna Earp, produced by SEVEN24 Films and Cineflix Studios, against Clinton Shorter for Prime Video series The Expanse; Tom Third for CBC’s Coroner, produced by Back Alley Films, Cineflix Studios, and Muse Entertainment; and Carli for CBC’s drama Frankie Drake Mysteries (Shaftesbury).
Christopher Nickel is up for original score for a non-fiction series or limited series for Discovery Channel Canada’s Highway Thru Hell, produced by Thunderbird-owned prodco Great Pacific Media, along with Andrew Gordon Macpherson for Vice Studios-produced Crave series Dark Side of the Ring. Also in that category is Todor Kobakov for The Unsolved Murder of Beverly Lynn Smith, produced by Amazon Studios in association with Muse Entertainment; Amanda Cawley for VisionTV’s Ageless Gardens, produced by Mark Bradley and Ian Toews; and Tom Third for Hungry Eyes Media-produced History original BLK: An Origin Story.
Nominees for Best Original Score for a Narrative Feature Film include Steph Copeland for The Retreat, produced by Outside Line Studio and Clique Pictures; Spencer Creaghan for Federgreen Entertainment and Lucky Dime Films-produced Motherly; Darren Fung for Inferno Pictures’ Cinema of Sleep; Steve London for Productivity Media, K5 Film and Balcony 9’s The Immaculate Room; and Nasser Sharaf for The Alleys.
Meanwhile, the short film category includes: Adrian Ellis for Old Mother Tongue, produced by Mark Trifunovic; Walker Grimshaw for Greg Fox’s Monkey-Love, Please Hold; Randolph Peters and Joshua Maikawa for Biofilm Productions’ Wrought; Phil Strong for Edward Burtynsky’s In the Wake of Progress commissioned and coproduced by Luminato Festival Toronto with Bob Ezrin; and Jordan Andrew for Cam Liardi’s Shadowlands.
Suad Bushnaq for CBC’s The Nature of Things: Why We Dance and Jim McGrath for Curb your Carbon are both in the running for best original score for a television special against Steph Copeland for Netflix’s Lethal Love, produced by Toronto’s Neshama Entertainment; Iva Delic, Kobakov and Tika Simone for U.S. network Bounce TV’s Faith Heist, produced by No Equal Entertainment; and Meiro Stamm and Antonio Naranjo for Brain Power Studio’s A Christmas Dance Reunion.
Deanna H. Choi for Last of the Right Whales, produced by HitPlay Productions, received a nomination for original score for a documentary feature film alongside Walker Grimshaw for Dear Audrey, produced by Cineflix Media, the National Film Board of Canada, and Swingdog Films. Other nominees in the category include Jonathan Kawchuk for Carbon: The Unauthorized Biography, coproduced by Alberta’s Handful of Films and Melbourne-based Genepool Productions; Kobakov for Fathom Film Group’s A.rtificial I.mmortality; and Julien Verschooris for Coexistence Films’ Coextinction.
Other contenders for a CASMA award include Janal Bechthold for original score for an interactive media for both Infinite Frame Media’s The Choice and No Reason to Apologize: The Resilient Legacy of Viola Desmond with La-Nai Gabriel. That category also includes: Felix Arifin for REM Cycles.
Neil Parfitt is nominated for Nelvana’s Ranger Rob and Matchbox Adventures for best original score for a children’s program or series. Also in that category: Steffan Andrews for LEGO Marvel Avengers: Time Twisted, and Caleb Chan and Brian Chan for Pinecone & Pony and Team Zenko.
The award winners will be announced in a hybrid in-person and virtual model on Sept. 21 at the El Mocambo in Toronto.
