HBO Max, Discovery+ merger not planned for Canada

Warner Bros. Discovery intends to consolidate the streaming services in the U.S. market in summer 2023.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s (WBD) planned merger of streaming platforms Discovery+ and HBO Max does not extend to Canada at this time, Playback Daily has confirmed.

The platform consolidation was announced Thursday (Aug. 4) during a Q2 earnings call, with WBD’s head of streaming JB Perrette unveiling that HBO Max and Discovery+ would re-launch as a single streamer in the U.S. market in summer 2023.

While Discovery+ launched in Canada in fall 2021, HBO Max is currently unavailable in the domestic market. Original HBO Max programming, however, is available on Bell Media streaming service Crave thanks to a long-term content deal inked in 2019. The two streaming services came under the same leadership following the 2022 merger between WarnerMedia and Discovery.

A spokesperson for WBD told Playback the company does not have “any plans to share for a launch in Canada” as of press time.

Bell Media has also confirmed that there are “no changes” to date to its long-term HBO Max Original deal in a statement to Playback.

The announcement comes amid a flurry of online speculation about the future of scripted content on HBO Max, after WBD opted to shelve the upcoming DC film Batgirl and the feature animation Scoob!: Holiday Haunt, both of which were set for launches on the streamer.

U.S. trades, including Variety, also reported that several original scripted titles, including HBO series Mrs. Fletcher and Run, and streaming-exclusive films Moonshot and The Witches, had been pulled from the streamer’s catalogue.

HBO Max is also reducing its live action kids and family content, Playback sister publication Kidscreen confirmed earlier this week following the cancellation of the Sony Pictures Television-produced comedy Gordita Chronicles.

The Canada/Italy copro Home Sweet Rome (First Generation Films/Red Monk Studio), co-commissioned by HBO Max and Cartoon Network, has not been impacted by the programming strategy pivot, Playback has confirmed.

WildBrain has not responded to a request for comment on the potential impact to Degrassi, which was commissioned by HBO Max in January 2022.
