Bell Fibe TV1 picks up second season of Sunshine City

EXCLUSIVE: Sideways Dog Productions founder Jake Horowitz says season two will go to camera in late October in Orillia, Ont.

The future is bright for comedy-mystery series Sunshine City from Orillia, Ont.-based Sideways Dog Productions, after Bell Fibe TV1 greenlit a second season.

The 6 x 22-minute season was financed by the community channel, Sideways Dog founder Jake Horowitz tells Playback Daily. The 4 x 20-minute first season is available for streaming on the VOD channel and app for Fibe.

Toronto-based Horowitz and Sideways Dog co-founder Andy Lewis are showrunners, co-writers and co-directors of the series. They also both produce with Qihui Lim, also from Sideways Dog Productions.

Horowitz says the prodco is about to enter pre-production for season two and plans to go to camera in late October in Orillia. The new season will see some characters return, including that of star Storm Steenson (pictured; The Boys), but have a different storyline.

Season one was also filmed in Orillia and set in a cottage country town, where the cast and crew of a travel series become entangled in an unsolved case and a mystery surrounding the host of the TV show they’re filming.

In season two, Steenson’s character hosts a Halloween special from a famous haunted mansion in a small cottage country town, where special guests are mysteriously murdered one by one. Also returning is Jarrod Clegg as Det. Cornelius Bates, alongside new cast members including Jonas Chernick (My Awkward Sexual Adventure, Ashgrove).

Both seasons were shot by Paul Maxwell as DP, and Jess Craymer as production designer.

Sideways Dog Productions previously produced the features All About Who You Know, which was on Crave and is next headed to Super Channel, and Cup of Cheer, which will make its debut on CBC Gem on Nov. 1.
