CBBC orders eighth season of The Next Step

The new season of the Canadian mockumentary-style kids series, created by Frank van Keeken, has been presold to Corus Entertainment and Australia's ABC.

Long-running Canadian children’s series The Next Step is getting back in the groove as British pubcaster CBBC commissions an eighth season, now in production in Toronto.

YTV has secured Canadian rights to the new season as part of a presale deal with Corus Entertainment, while Australian pubcaster ABC has also picked up rights to season eight.

The new season is led by co-showrunners and executive producers Amy Cole (Odd Squad) and Romeo Candido (Son of a Critch), and is expected to air in Canada and the U.K. in the fall.

The Next Step was created by Frank van Keeken and is produced by Boat Rocker Studios (formerly Temple Street Productions) with the participation of the Shaw Rocket Fund. Executive producers include Boat Rocker’s Ivan Schneeberg, David Fortier, Jon Rutherford, Shaleen Sangha and Bob Higgins.

The mockumentary-style series, which follows tweens competing in a reality dance show, was originally commissioned in 2012 by Family Channel back when it was owned by Astral Media, and was renewed for six seasons. CBBC took over as the commissioning broadcaster for season seven, which aired on CBC Gem in Canada.

Boat Rocker and BBC Studios handle global distribution of The Next Step, while Boat Rocker manages global franchise development and consumer products.

The Next Step has racked up more than 200 episodes and has been sold to over 120 countries worldwide, according to Boat Rocker.

The Next Step is a powerhouse brand whose success is a testimony to its gripping and relevant storylines,” said Rutherford, president, Boat Rocker Studios, Kids & Family and Rights, in a statement. “The unique blend of dance and drama really strikes a chord with viewers and the brand continues to grow both on, and off screen.”
