Prime Video is bringing LOL: Last One Laughing to Quebec

Amazon has greenlit a Montreal-shot version of the hit comedy franchise with host Patrick Huard after launching LOL: Last One Laughing Canada.

Canada hasn’t heard the last of LOL: Last One Laughing.

Prime Video has commissioned a Quebec edition of the Amazon original hit unscripted format, after recently launching LOL: Last One Laughing Canada, produced by Toronto’s Insight Productions.

Actor-comedian Patrick Huard (Bon Cop Bad Cop, Starbuck) will host LOL: Qui Rira Le Dernier?, which will be produced in association with Attraction and filmed in Montreal with an all-French-speaking cast.

The comedy series will be available exclusively on Prime Video in 240 countries and territories worldwide later this year. Amazon tells Playback Daily the number of episodes and length haven’t been confirmed yet.

LOL: Last One Laughing Canada is an English-language version of the franchise in which comedic actors and stand-ups compete to make each other laugh first while being locked in a room filled with cameras for six hours. The victor gets to donate their winnings to the charity of their choice.

The format stems from a successful Japanese Amazon original series created by and starring Hitoshi Matsumoto and owned by Yoshimoto Kogyo. There are also local versions in Mexico, Australia, Germany, Italy, India, Spain and France, where that version is also called LOL: Qui rit, sort!

Amazon’s other Canadian original series include All or Nothing: Toronto Maple Leafs (Cream Productions), The Kids in the Hall (Project10, Broadway Video), The Lake (AMAZE) and Three Pines (Left Bank, with Montreal’s Muse Entertainment as the service producer).

“Quebec has a reputation as a leader in comedy, with the world’s largest international comedy festival and comedians playing in front of sold-out crowds across the province,” said James Farrell, head of local originals at Amazon Studios, in a news release. “In addition to that reputation, having the calibre of a host like Patrick Huard, who is not only a celebrated actor and director but also beloved comedian, all the pieces are in place for another hilarious version of LOL for Quebec.”
