Shudder renews Slasher, Eric McCormack to star in fifth season

The Shaftesbury-produced horror anthology will go into production in Toronto in the spring.

Shudder has renewed Shaftesbury’s horror anthology Slasher for a fifth season.

Titled Slasher: Ripper, the new season will star Canadian actor Eric McCormack (Will & Grace, Travelers) and follows a Jack the Ripper-like killer in late 19th century London who targets the rich and powerful. Production will begin this spring in Toronto.

The news was part of a raft of AMC Networks renewals and greenlights announced during the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour on Thursday (Feb. 10).

Executive producers on Slasher: Ripper include series creator Aaron Martin, showrunner Ian Carpenter, Christina Jennings, Scott Garvie, Thomas P. Vitale and Adam MacDonald. Producers are Erin Berry and Paige Haight.

The Slasher series was revived by Shudder in 2020. Titled Slasher: Flesh & Blood, the fourth season counted famed horror director David Cronenberg among its stars. It premiered on Shudder in the U.S., Australia and New Zealand in August 2021 and on Hollywood Suite in October that same year. The Canadian broadcast rights to Slasher: Ripper have not been finalized as of press time.

Slasher was initially commissioned by U.S. network Chiller and Canada’s Super Channel. Netflix ordered two additional seasons after acquiring the streaming rights to season one, but did not renew it following season three.

Shaftesbury has strategic partnership with AMC Networks, with the U.S. company making a “strategic investment” in the Toronto-based prodco 2021. The deal saw Acorn TV general manager Matthew Graham and AMC Networks International EVP, programming and marketing Harold Gronenthal join Shaftesbury’s board of directors.
