CBC comedy Sort Of and drama features Cinema of Sleep and Sugar Daddy have each earned two nominations for the 20th ACTRA Awards.
ACTRA Toronto’s annual celebration of its member performances will be presented on March 6, held virtually on the union’s YouTube channel.
Sort Of, produced by the Sphere Media-owned Sienna Films, is one of five series nominated for the Members Choice Series Ensemble Award, while cast member Amanda Cordner has been nominated in the Outstanding Performance – Gender Non-Conforming or Female. This is the first year since ACTRA changed the name of their juried performance categories to be more inclusive.
The other series nominated for the Members Choice Series Ensemble Award are fellow CBC series Baroness Von Sketch Show (Frantic Films), Kim’s Convenience (Thunderbird Entertainment) and Pretty Hard Cases (Cameron Pictures), as well as Bell Fibe TV1 series Pink is In! (Pink One Productions).
Canadian features Cinema of Sleep (Inferno Pictures) and Sugar Daddy (Clique Pictures; Violator Films; Floyder Films) each picked up two nominations in the outstanding performance categories.
For Cinema of Sleep, Getenesh Berhe is nominated in the gender non-conforming or female category, while Dayo Ade is nominated in gender non-conforming or male. For Sugar Daddy, Kelly McCormack, who also wrote and produced the film, is nominated in the gender non-conforming or female category and Colm Feore is nominated in gender non-conforming or male.
Additional nominees in Outstanding Performance – Gender Non-Conforming or Female are Amanda Brugel for U.S. series The Handmaid’s Tale and Tamara Podemski for CBC drama Coroner (Back Alley Film Productions; Muse Entertainment Enterprises; Cineflix Studios).
Rounding out nominees in Outstanding Performance – Gender Non-Conforming or Male are Emeka Agada for Global medical drama Nurses (Entertainment One; ICF Films), Vlad Alexis in the feature Lune (Open City Works) and Thomas Antony Olajide in the drama film Learn to Swim (Leilani Films; Wildling Pictures).
In the voicework categories, both Go, Dog. Go! (Dreamworks; Wildbrain Studios) and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy (Eidos Montreal; Marvel Entertainment) each picked up two nominations. Go, Dog. Go!‘s Joshua Graham and Anand Rajaram were each nominated in the gender non-conforming or male category. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Jon McLaren earned a nomination in the same category, with Kimberly-Sue Murray picked up a nod in the gender non-conforming or female category.
Additional nominees for Outstanding Performance – Gender Non-Conforming or Female Voice are Angela Asher for narrating the Silver Cord trailer (Space Mop), Tina Jung in the video game Riders Republic, Lisa Norton for the CBC and TFO series Glowbies (Gallus Entertainment) and Ana Sami for the YTV series Ollie’s Pack (Nelvana).
Rounding out nominees for Outstanding Performance – Gender Non-Conforming or Male Voice are Deven Mack for the video game Dragalia Lost and Rob Tinkler for his work in the English version of French animated film Around the World in 80 Days (Cottonwood Media; Studio Canal; France 3 Cinema; Umedia).
