Wattpad Webtoon Studios has inked its first major global partnership since it formed earlier this year as ViacomCBS International Studios (VIS) taps into the digital publishing house’s existing IP.
The deal will see the Toronto-based studio and VIS co-produce television content for ViacomCBS’ platforms and networks, including streaming service Paramount+.
Using “data-backed insights and top IP” from both Wattpad authors and Webtoon digital comics, the companies will “identify local and regional hits with global appeal, spanning Latin America, Europe, the U.K., and other international markets.”
“ViacomCBS International Studios is committed to telling authentic, local stories from emerging creatives from all corners of the world,” said Ari Tan, VP, head of strategy at VIS in a statement. “Now through our partnership with Wattpad Webtoon Studios, we’ll have the opportunity to use this exciting, data-driven approach to inform our storytelling and amplify new creative talents through our global platforms.”
Wattpad and Webtoon’s content arms merged in June following Wattpad’s acquisition by South Korean company Naver in January.
Led by president Aron Levitz (pictured), Wattpad Webtoon Studios recently wrapped production on Float, a romance film starring Robbie Amell and Andrea Bang, in Vancouver. The film is produced by Wattpad Webtoon, Collective Pictures and Brightlight Pictures. Lionsgate holds worldwide distribution rights, excluding Canada, with Elevation Pictures handling the Canadian release.
