The Independent Production Fund has chosen 10 scripted projects spanning a range of genres to receive production financing through its 2021 Short Form Series Production Program.
The Canadian private independent foundation says six of the approved series, which are created primarily for digital platforms and channels, are in English and four are in French. Last year nine projects were chosen.
IPF has earmarked more than $1.9 million in equity investments for the 2021 projects and plans to provide them with consultation, training and advisory services.
English-language series making the cut include the LoCo Motion Pictures Ontario dramedy My Dead Mom from Lauren Corber (pictured) and Palmer Baranek; the Ontario comedy I Hate People, People Hate Me from Turbo Bobbi Creative and a team of Jeff So, Evan Dell’Aquila and Lisa Filipelli; and the Ontario sci-fi mystery Silver Cord from Space Mop and Davin Lengyel.
The English-language list is rounded out by the Ontario Blue Ice Pictures comedy Stories From My Gay Grandparents from Samantha Levine, Scott Farley and Perrie Voss; the Ontario/Alberta drama Streams Flow From a River from Fae Pictures and Kinoprole Inc., and a team of Shant Joshi, Gillian McKercher, Lindsay Blair Goeldner, Christopher Yip and Abdul Malik; and the True West Films Ontario comedy The Drop from Elizabeth Yake, Dani Pagliarello, Aisha Evelyna, Evan M. Landry and Liz Whitmere.
The approved French-language series are all from Quebec and include the dramedy 20h30 chez Mathieu from Productions Bien Joué and Sébastien Iannuzzi; the Babel Films mystery P.A.M (Programme d’assistant moniteur) from a team of Philippe-A. Allard, Marco Frascarelli, Mathieu Paiement and Eric Piccoli; the comedy-mystery Saint-Jean-du-Lac from Pimiento Medias and Paola Arriagada-Nunez; and the Echo Media comedy Symphonie pathétique from Sarah Chatelain.
The initiative stems from the IPF/CMF Development Packaging Program, which saw a member evaluation committee select 20 projects to receive development funding in April. Seventeen of those completed their development phase and became eligible for the Short Form Series Production Program on Oct. 1.
A select jury and the IPF board of directors analyzed and rated the production funding applications.
