Production underway on Katherine Jerkovic’s second feature

Produced by 1976 Productions, the award-winning writer-director has assembled a female-led team for The Coyote.

Three years after winning Best First Canadian Feature at the Toronto International Film Festival, Katherine Jerkovic is rolling cameras on her sophomore feature film The Coyote (“Le Coyote”) in La Malbaie, outside Quebec City.

The drama is written and directed by Jerkovic, who has assembled a team of women for the project, including assistant director Marie-Alexandre Kerouac, cinematographer Léna Mill-Reuillard, production manager Estelle Champoux, picture editor Sophie Farkas-Bolla and costumer Oleksakdra Lykova.

Produced by Nicolas Comeau from Montreal’s 1976 Productions, and funded by SODEC, Telefilm Canada and the Harold Greenberg Fund, the film will be distributed in Canada by FunFilm. It is scheduled for theatrical release in 2022.

The Coyote follows a burned out 50-year-old immigrant, recovering addict and former chef who works for a housekeeping company. An opportunity to work in a restaurant in Baie-Comeau reignites his passion. But his new start is complicated when his estranged daughter, who’s struggling with her own addiction, shows up and asks for help care for his grandson.

The film stars Jorge Martinez Colorado, Eva Avila, Enzo Desmeules, and Catalina Pop.

Production is expected to wrap in Nov. 6.
