Photon Films acquires Trevor Mack’s coming-of-age drama

Portraits From a Fire will have its theatrical release in Canada on Nov. 1, following its film festival run.

Photon Films has picked up the Canadian distribution rights to Trevor Mack’s coming-of-age film Portraits From a Fire.

The distributor, previously known as Pacific Northwest Pictures, will release the film at Landmark Cinemas across Canada on Nov. 1, followed by a VOD release on Nov. 9.

Portraits From a Fire is the feature directorial debut of Mack, of the Tsilhqot’in Nation, who created the story alongside Derek Vermillion. The script is written by Manny Mahal.

The film is produced by Rylan Friday and Kate Kroll. Screen Siren president Trish Dolman serves as executive producer.

Portraits From a Fire stars newcomer William Lulua as a lonely teen who spends his days vlogging from his Indigenous community and has a strained relationship with his father. One day a mysterious and charismatic figure arrives and encourages him to create a film about his mother’s disappearance.

Starring alongside Lulua are Nathaniel Arcand (FBI: Most Wanted), Asivak Koostachin (Red Snow), Sammy Stump, Melanie Bobby and Pauline Bob-King.

Kaayla Whachell is the film’s cinematographer, while Elad Tzadok is the film editor.

Portraits From a Fire made its world premiere at the Edmonton International Film Festival and will make its Ontario debut at the imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival.

Mack has previously run the festival circuit with his short films, including Clouds of Autumn, which won Best Canadian Short Drama at imagineNATIVE in 2015.
