Discovery+ to launch in Canada later this year

The announcement was made by CEO David Zaslav during the company's Q2 investor call this week.

A  new U.S. streaming will make its way to Canada this year, as Discovery Inc. announces plans to launch Discovery+ in the domestic market later this year.

Discovery CEO David Zaslav revealed the expansion plan during the company’s 2021 Q2 investor call on Tuesday (Aug. 3), stating that the subscription-based streaming platform would be available in Canada, Brazil and the Philippines in the latter half of the year.

Discovery+ includes programming from Discovery-owned channels such as HGTV, Food Network, TLC, Investigation Discovery, OWN, Travel Channel, Discovery Channel and Animal Planet, as well as programming from BBC and A+E Networks channels, such as Lifetime and HISTORY, as part of a content partnership deal.

There are currently no further details on what will be available on Discovery+ in Canada, a Discovery spokesperson told Playback Daily.

Much of Discovery programming is available in Canada through Bell Media and Corus Entertainment channels. Bell Media’s brands include Discovery, Animal Planet, Investigation Discovery, Discovery Velocity and Discovery Science. Corus Entertainment channels include HGTV Canada, Food Network, DIY Network, HISTORY and OWN.

A Bell Media spokesperson told Playback Daily there will be “no immediate changes to Discovery Channel in Canada.”

Discovery+ initially launched in international markets such as India, the U.K. and Ireland in 2020 before becoming available in the U.S. on Jan. 4. Among the streamer’s Canadian commissions is I Got Lucky from Cream Productions.

Discovery’s direct-to-consumer subscriber count is more than 18 million, according to the company’s most recent financial statement. Discovery’s revenue increased to 21% at US$3.06 billion in Q2 2021.

Discovery is in the midst of a mammoth change as the company plans a massive merger to AT&T’s WarnerMedia. The emerging entity, Warner Bros. Discovery, is expected to form in 2022 with Zaslav set to lead.
