Adriana Maggs tapped as Coroner showrunner as season four rolls

The veteran scribe and producer replaces Morwyn Brebner for the upcoming 12-episode season, which will also see star Serinda Swan make her TV directorial debut.

CBC hour-long drama Coroner is back in production on its fourth season, with Adriana Maggs taking over showrunning responsibilities from series creator Morwyn Brebner.

Filming on the upcoming 12-episode season is currently underway in Toronto and elsewhere in Ontario. Season four will debut on CBC and CBC Gem in winter 2022.

Maggs, whose other credits include Caught and Grown Up Movie Star, assumes the showrunner role after Brebner, who served as showrunner for the previous three seasons, launched her own production shingle, Husk Media, in partnership with Cineflix Media. Brebner will continue to be involved with the Muse Entertainment, Cineflix Studios and Back Alley Films-produced show in an ongoing way.

Maggs will lead a writers’ room including Noelle Carbone (Wynonna Earp), Shannon Masters (Cardinal), Laura Good (Burden of Truth), Nathalie Younglai (Super Zee), Seneca Aaron (Nurses), Wendy Brathwaite (Akilla’s Escape), JP Larocque (Another Life), Mazi Khalighi (Foraldraskap) and Lindsey Addawoo (Promise Me). Her most recent writing and EP credits include Pretty Hard Cases and The Hardy Boys. At the 2021 Canada Screen Awards, Maggs was a co-recipient of the Best Direction, Web Program or Series prize for Hey Lady!

The new season of Coroner will also see star Serinda Swan, who plays Dr. Jenny Cooper, sitting in the director’s chair for the first time. Adrienne Mitchell (Durham County) Ruba Nadda (Frankie Drake Mysteries), Farhad Mann (Murdoch Mysteries), Samir Rehem (Tiny Pretty Things), Cory Bowles (Pretty Hard Cases) and Liz Farrer (Coroner) will also direct episodes.

Executive producers include Back Alley Films’ Adrienne Mitchell, Muse Entertainment’s Aren Prupas and Jonas Prupas and Cineflix Studios’ Peter Emerson and Brett Burlock. Cineflix Rights holds international distribution rights.

In the U.S., Coroner airs on The CW, with the third season set to premiere on Aug. 19. It launched on Netflix Canada in 2020, and has also been sold to Nine Network (Australia), Channel 4 (U.K.) Sky (U.K.), Paramount+(Nordics), SBS (Belgium), Sky Italia, Globoplay (Brazil) and Stöð 2 (Iceland).
