New platform Binge aims to bridge gap between gaming and traditional entertainment

Canadian film producers Cody Hackman and Allan Ungar revealed the new platform, set to launch in 2022, at video-game trade event E3.

Canadian film producers Cody Hackman and Allan Ungar have unveiled plans to launch a streaming service that bridges the gap between gaming and traditional entertainment.

Binge, unveiled today (June 9) at E3, one of the preeminent trade events for the video game industry, is an on-demand service that will include original series and “shows inspired by the most popular video game worlds and content creators,” according to a release.

Binge will feature both scripted and unscripted content created specifically for the platform. It is set to go live in 2022 and will launch in Canada and international markets.

“While gaming may have become more mainstream in recent years, we are still sorely underrepresented in the entertainment space,” said a release from Binge, which will be accessible for free on any internet-connected device.

According to the company, it has inked development deals and signed partnerships with notable content creators, game publishers and studios to produce series a wide variety of original content. The platform will also allow users to watch content with friends through “Squad Parties.”

Hackman, whose executive producer credits include Hidden in the Woods (2014) and The Sound (2017), will serve as chief strategy officer of the Canadian owned and operated company. He’s also an EP on upcoming features Beyond Skyline and Gridlocked Shanghai.

Meanwhile, Ungar, who is directing and executive producing the upcoming Josh Duhamel and Mel Gibson-starring feature Bandit, will serve as Binge’s chief content officer. Ungar also wrote and directed the short film Uncharted (2018), starring Nathan Fillion.

The latter film was created as a “love letter for the gaming community but to also prove there was a place for these kinds of adaptations,” according to Ungar. “The support the film received shed light on the fact that there is a real demand for this kind of content. Now we are thrilled to bring that same passion and fandom to binge.com. But, most importantly, to create an opportunity for gamers around the world to actively contribute and help define the future of games entertainment with us.”

Binge said it will have a number of announcements to share in the coming months ahead of its 2022 launch.
