Canada’s Got Talent is making a splashy return. Rogers Sports & Media confirmed the talent competition is returning for a new season at its annual upfront event on June 8.
Production on the new season kicks off this fall in Niagara Falls and premieres a nine-episode season in Spring 2022. Simon Cowell will make an appearance during the season, but a host and judges have not yet been announced.
“We’ve seen so many talented people from Canada over the years and we always said we’ve got to make this show again,” Cowell said in a release. “I am so excited Canada’s Got Talent is returning and believe it will be an amazing experience. I would like to personally thank Citytv for giving the show and all of the contestants this opportunity.”
The talent competition ran for one season when it originally debuted on Citytv in 2012. At the time it was hosted by Breakfast Television’s Dina Pugliese, while Stephan Moccio, Measha Brueggergosman and Martin Short judged. The revival is produced in partnership with Fremantle, SYCO Entertainment and McGillivray Entertainment Media Inc. Scott McGillivray will serve as executive producer, along with Angela Jennings and Mike Bickerton.
Canada’s Got Talent isn’t the only Canadian spinoff of a popular franchise anchoring the Citytv schedule this season. Rogers Sports & Media also confirmed the debut of the previously announced Canadian iteration of Bachelor in Paradise, which hits the schedule Sundays at 8 p.m. this fall. The spinoff features a mix of fan favourites from the original series and Canadian fans.
The broadcaster also announced the launch of The Bachelor After Show, which airs immediately following Bachelor in Paradise Canada, Sundays at 10 p.m. KiSS 92.5 personalities Deepa Prashad and Daryn Jones will host.
Elsewhere, the broadcaster also confirmed the fourth season of Hudson & Rex debuts midseason and kicks off production on 16 new episodes in St. John’s later this month. According to an official release the Canadian adaptation of the Australian format Inspector Rex has seen a 77% audience growth since the first season. Shaftesbury and Pope Productions produce in association with Citytv and Beta Film GmbH.
Over at OMNI, Breakthrough Entertainment’s Blood and Water: Fire & Ice returns for its third and final season beginning June 13. The third season continues the saga of the Xie family and private detective Michelle Chang (Selena Lee) as she hunts down the criminal who kidnapped her daughter.
In addition to the show announcements, Rogers Sports & Media also announced Level UP, an initiative in conjunction with Access Reelworld. The program provides on-the-ground set experience to emerging writers and directors who identify as Black, Indigenous or people of colour. To kick off the program, successful applicants will shadow the crew and writers of Hudson & Rex.
In addition to the Canadian originals, Citytv also announced the renewal of its partnership with Fremantle on America’s Got Talent, while confirming the return of Bachelorette, Bachelor in Paradise, Dancing With the Stars, and American Idol.
The network also continues to be in the Dick Wolf business and is now the home to all three of the Chicago franchise dramas, in addition to Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (previously at Bell Media), and spinoffs Law & Order: Organized Crime and Law & Order: For the Defense.
Citytv has also acquired new drama Ordinary Joe, starring James Wolk, to debut this fall. Acquisition comedies Black-ish, Duncanville, Kenan, Mr. Mayor and Young Rock also return at midseason.
