Gaumont rolls on adaptation of Menteur

The original Canadian feature, directed and co-written by Émile Gaudreault, was the highest grossing domestic film in 2019.

Homegrown hit and comedy film Menteur (Compulsive Liar) is getting the adaptation treatment in France.

French studio Gaumont has picked up the rights to adapt the film, which was released in Canada in 2019.

The original comedy – which follows a compulsive liar whose fibs suddenly start becoming true – was co-written and directed by Émile Gaudreault and produced by Gaudreault and Denise Robert of Montreal’s Cinémaginaire. Eric Boulianne and Sebastien Ravary were the film’s co-writers.

The adaptation is now in production and is written and directed by Olivier Baroux, the actor and director behind the French comedy Les Tuches. The film’s stars include Tarek Boudali, Victor Artus Solaro and Pauline Clément. Gaumont CEO Sidonie Dumas is the producer.

The original Menteur, named Playback‘s Film of the Year, was the highest-grossing Canadian film in 2019, earning more than $6 million at the box office in Quebec. It crossed the $1 million mark on its opening weekend. Distribution for Menteur is handled by eOne’s Les Films Séville.
