Film distribution company Quiver Distribution has acquired the worldwide rights to The Retreat written by Alyson M. Richards and directed by Pat Mills.
The thriller by the duo, who previously worked together on comedies Guidance and Don’t Talk to Irene, follows a lesbian couple who embark on a romantic weekend at a remote cabin in the woods, but must fight for their lives when a group of militant serial killers hunt them.
Produced by Richards’ Outside Line Studio and Lauren Grant’s Clique Pictures, exec producers include Leah Jaunzems, Emma Phelan, John Laing and Mark Gingras.
The film stars Tommie-Amber Pirie (Ginny & Georgia), Aaron Ashmore (Locke & Key), Rossif Sutherland (Possessor), Sarah Allen (On the Road) and Celina Sinden (The Outpost).
“The ensemble cast shines in this clever thriller that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats,” said Quiver co-presidents Berry Meyerowitz and Jeff Sackman in a statement about the news.
Notably, the company plans to release the title in theatres, digitally and on-demand on May 21 in the U.S. and Canada.
Previously, Richards and The Retreat were selected to take part in the 2019 Writers Lab for New York Women in Film & Television, a lab supported by Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman. Additionally, the project was one of seven projects tapped for the Frontières’ Official Selection program.
