Six years after the release of Sex, Fame & Murder: The Luka Magnotta Story (pictured), a documentary exploring Canadian Luka Magnotta’s murder of a Chinese student, the film’s producer Hiltz Squared Media is working on a followup.

The Montreal-based company has optioned the rights to the book My Son The Killer, co-written by Magnotta’s mother Anna Yourkin and Brian Whitney. The deal was negotiated between Hiltz Squared and publisher Wild Blue Press.

Pre-production is currently underway on the follow-up doc, tentatively titled After the Cats. Coproduced with Slogan Entertainment, the film will focus on Yourkin’s perspective and examine Magnotta’s childhood, in addition to interviews with his psychiatrist and the psychiatrists who examined him before his trial.

Producer Myles Shane told Playback Daily the hope is to start production in the spring on the two-hour, two-part project. The producers are in early discussions with both a U.S. and Canadian broadcaster, he added.

The initial doc, released in 2014, examined Magnotta’s murder of Chinese exchange student Lin Jun, whose dismembered torso was found in an alley behind an apartment in Montreal in 2012. The case – for which Magnotta was later convicted of first-degree murder – garnered international attention at the time and the Magnotta story was later the subject of the Netflix original doc, Don’t F**k With Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer. 

Released in December 2019, the Netflix doc renewed interest in the Luka Magnotta story, leading OUTtv to acquire the Naomi Hiltz-directed original earlier this month. Sex, Fame & Murder was made with the financial participation of A&E, Discovery ID, Bell, Foxtel and Planete.
