Wynonna Earp rides off with People’s Choice Award

The series starring Melanie Scrofano previously picked up the award for Sci-Fi/Fantasy Show in 2018.

The people have spoken: Wynonna Earp is the 2020 E! People’s Choice Awards’ best Sci-Fi/Fantasy Show.

Named yesterday (Nov. 15), the award marks the Calgary-shot show’s second win in the section – where it picked up the same prize in 2018.

Created for television by showrunner Emily Andras, the series starring Melanie Scrofano (Bad Blood), Tim Rozon (Schitt’s Creek), Dominique Provost-Chalkley (Avengers: Age of Ultron) and Katherine Barrell (Workin’ Moms) was up against DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Legacies, Supergirl, Supernatural, The Flash and Ontario-shot Netflix series Locke & Key and The Umbrella Academy in the category.

The series from Cineflix Studios and SEVEN24 Films for Sci-Fi in Canada and SyFy in the U.S. saw its first six episodes of its fourth season air this summer, with Wynonna Earp‘s final six episodes of the season set to debut at a later date once completed.

Notably, in March, Wynonna Earp was one of many Canadian productions that had to temporarily shut down its operations due to COVID-19 prevention measures.

Prior to this, season four was originally set for production in February 2019 until financing fell through, leading to fans launching a social media campaign called #FightForWynonna to ensure the show following Wyatt Earp’s greatgranddaughter would return. This summer, Bell Media-owned streaming service Crave signed on as a producing partner and Cineflix Studios came on board to coproduce the show. Cineflix Rights holds world sales rights to all four seasons of the series, with IDW Entertainment handling U.S. distribution.

Of note, the People’s Choice Awards also saw Netflix series Never Have I Ever, which stars Canadian Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, walk away with comedy show of 2020. The event also saw Canadian series Schitt’s Creek nominated for a number of prizes, including comedy show, bingeworthy show and male TV star of 2020 and comedy TV star of 2020 for Dan Levy.
