MIPCOM deals: Cineflix Rights, Guru, ComediHa!, Open Door

Wynonna Earp sells across Europe, Guru Studio inks broadcast deals for two preschool series, plus more deals as MIPCOM Online+ gets underway.

Cineflix Rights has inked a deal with NBCUniversal International Networks which will see all four seasons (49 x 60 minutes) of Wynonna Earp air across its sci-fi channels in Iberia, France, Germany, Austria and Switzerland (SYFY), and in Poland and the Balkans (SCIFI). Cineflix Rights will launch the series, created for TV by showrunner Emily Andras, at MIPCOM Online+.

The first half of the show’s fourth season aired in July and August, while production on the second half of the season resumed over the summer after filming was halted in March due to the pandemic. Seven24 Films produces the series, with Crave and Cineflix Media coproducing and Cineflix Rights handling international sales.

Guru Studio

Toronto animation storyteller Guru Studio has signed a raft of broadcast deals for Pikwik Pack and its hit Emmy-nominated True and the Rainbow Kingdom. The company inked pre-sales for Pikwik Pack with Super RTL (Germany), Canal Panda (Portugal), HOP (Israel), and Minimini+ (Poland), while True and the Rainbow Kingdom was sold to TVP ABC (Poland), 9Go! (Australia) and AFN (US Military). In addition to these two series, Guru will also be shopping Big Blue (52 x 11 minutes) and Justin Time (74 x 11 minutes, 2 x 22 mini movies) at MIPCOM Online+.

ComediHa!

Quebec-based ComediHa! has acquired the worldwide distribution rights to five series from Productions Casablanca ahead of MIPCOM Online+. ComediHa!, a comedy-focused content company, picked up the rights to scripted dramedy The Phoenix (6 x 60 minutes); Anyway (30 x 30 minutes), a comedy where motherly sarcasm cuts straight to the heart; Writer’s Block (22 x 60 minutes), a  dark comedy following two screenwriters; The Invincibles (35 x 60 minutes), a scripted series previously adapted in France; and scripted web series The Elevator (35 x 5 minutes). ComediHa! is shopping the projects at MIPCOM Online+ alongside other titles such as LOL:) ComediHa! (140 x 30 minutes), Vintage Curves of Cuba (10 x 30 minutes) and Hammer Ed – Screwy Plans (10 x 30 minutes).

Sideways Film, Open Door 

U.K.-based distributor Sideways Film has acquired the international rights (excluding Canada) to artificial intelligence-focused doc Margin of Error, produced by Tom Powers (Political Blind Date) of Toronto prodco Open Door. The TVO original documentary is set for its world broadcast and online premiere on Saturday (Oct. 17) as part of an “Anniversary Telethon” commemorating TVO’s 50th year. Directed by Peter Gombos, the doc examines how artificial intelligence is changing the science of polling and prediction with an investigation on “Polly”, a new AI method that is disrupting traditional political polling. Sideways Films will begin shopping the doc at MIPCOM Online+.
