Amazon Studios has confirmed that its big-budget original series The Boys will be returning to Toronto to shoot its third season.

The renewal comes six weeks ahead of the show’s season-two premiere on Sept. 4, with filming on new episodes tentatively scheduled to commence in the new year.

“We hope to be shooting in early 2021, but that’s up to a microscopic virus,” said showrunner and executive producer Eric Kripke (Supernatural) in a statement. A virtual writers’ room is currently working on new episodes.

Produced by Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television Studios with Point Grey Pictures, Kripke Enterprises and Original Film, the superhero show streams on Amazon Prime Video both in Canada and internationally. Seth Rogen (Preacher), Evan Goldberg (Preacher), James Weaver (Preacher), Neal H. Moritz (Prison Break), Pavun Shetty (New Girl), Phil Sgriccia, Craig Rosenberg, Rebecca Sonnenshine, Ken Levin and Jason Netter serve as EPs alongside Kripke.

The Boys is one of a number of Amazon originals to shoot in Canada. According to the company, around 18 of its original series have been filmed in Canada since 2015, including The Expanse (Toronto), Upload (Vancouver) and Tales from the Loop (Winnipeg). In early March, just prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in North America, Amazon greenlit its first original Canadian series, a revival of the comedy classic The Kids in the Hall
