Tribeca, YouTube partner with global film festivals

The 10-day digital event We Are One: A Global Film Festival will feature free curated programming from the likes of TIFF, Cannes, Berlin and Sundance.

Tribeca Film Festival organizer Tribeca Enterprises has partnered with YouTube to present the 10-day digital event We Are One: A Global Film Festival this May.

In addition to Tribeca, the event will feature programming from 20 film festivals worldwide including the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Sundance Film Festival, Cannes Film Festival, Berlin International Film Festival, BFI London Film Festival and New York Film Festival.

Running from May 29 to June 7, the festival will be free to audiences worldwide and include films, shorts, documentaries, music, comedy and conversations. The event will benefit the World Health Organization (WHO) COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund, as well as local relief partners in each region.

Tribeca’s 19th annual edition was postponed in March following a ban imposed on March 12 by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on events or gatherings of 500 people or more. Organizers announced plans in April to shift select programming to an online format due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We often talk about film’s uniquely powerful role in inspiring and uniting people across borders and differences to help heal the world. All of the world needs healing right now,” Tribeca Enterprises and Tribeca Film Festival co-founder and CEO Jane Rosenthal said in a statement. “We Are One: A Global Film Festival unites curators, artists and storytellers to entertain and provide relief to audiences worldwide. In working with our extraordinary festival partners and YouTube we hope that everyone gets a taste of what makes each festival so unique and appreciates the art and power of film.”

Earlier this month, TIFF launched the Stay-at-Home Cinema digital programming in partnership with Crave, with TIFF holding weekly Instagram Live Q&As based on the curated Best of TIFF Crave collection. The organization also said it is looking at “onsite and digital innovations” for its 2020 edition.

We Are One: A Global Film Festival follows other recent initiatives from other festivals and partners. For example, Amazon recently teamed up with Austin, TX-based festival South by Southwest (SXSW) to launch Prime Video presents the SXSW 2020 Film Festival Collection – a free online film festival on the platform for U.S.-based users. Additionally, both Hot Docs and the Canadian Film Fest have partnered with broadcasters to bring the festival experience to Canadian viewers at home with the linear debut of films set for both festivals via Hot Docs at Home on CBC and The Canadian Film Fest presented by Super Channel.
