CBC switches up Sunday nights, puts Tom Power in primetime

tom powerAs broadcasters across the world make on-the-fly schedule adjustments in reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic, CBC is bringing a new hour-long series into the mix for Sunday nights.

Debuting this Sunday (April 5) at 8 p.m. on both CBC TV and CBC Gem, What’re You At With Tom Power sees the award-winning host connect virtually with Canadian artists, musicians and storytellers from his living room.

Featuring a mix of live and pre-taped segments, the series kicks off with an interview with Schitt’s Creek showrunner, co-creator and star Daniel Levy ahead of its finale episode on Tuesday, April 7.

The episode will also include a performance by JUNO Award-winning singer-songwriter Jessie Reyez, as well as conversations with Canadians in their communities as they share how they are navigating these extraordinary circumstances.

“As we all face unprecedented isolation in this period of uncertainty and change, we seek to play a meaningful role in connecting Canadians from coast to coast to coast,” said Sally Catto, CBC’s general manager of entertainment, factual and sports in a statement about the show’s launch.

Like broadcasters across the globe, CBC has made a number of shifts in recent weeks as it looks to fill holes in its schedule. Two weeks ago, the pubcaster unveiled a new Saturday night programming block, Movie Night in Canada, to replace the gap in its schedule left by the suspension of the NHL season. Canadian movies that have aired so far include Adriana Maggs’ Goalie, Paul Gross’ Hyena Road, Director X’s Across the Line and Jean-François Pouliot’s Dr. Cabbie.

Also airing on Sunday is a news conference in which Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will answer questions from children across the country. The questions will be compiled by the teams at CBC Kids News and Radio-Canada’s news platform MAJ, with the conference airing simultaneously on CBC TV, CBC Gem and ICI TÉLÉ (as well as the CBC Kids News and MAJ platforms) on Sunday at 9 a.m. CBC/Radio-Canada said it will make the video conference available to all broadcasters.
