9 Story Media taps Karen Fowler to lead development

The producer and former CBC Kids exec will head the prodco's development team in Toronto, aiming to boost its animation and live-action production slate.

karen-fowler-019 Story Media Group has hired Karen Fowler as VP, development (animation and live-action).

Based in Toronto, Fowler will lead 9 Story’s development team, with the goal of expanding the company’s development and production slate. Fowler will report to CCO Angela Santomero and work closely with Jennie Stacey (VP, development), Sarah Wallendjack (VP, development and production) and Jeremy Slutskin, who leads the prodco’s live-action division from New York as VP, live-action development and production.

Fowler is an Emmy-winning producer, courtesy of her work on the PBS series The Electric Company. Most recently, she served as development exec and creative producer on Abby Hatcher for Spin Master, and previously led development and production at CBC Kids. Fowler has also held roles at Sesame Workshop and Nickelodeon.

The Toronto prodco is currently in development on live-action sci-fi series Motel 51, in partnership with Peacock Alley Entertainment. The live-action division, led by Slutskin, was launched at the beginning of 2019.

On the animation front, 9 Story is set to develop and coproduce an animation sketch series based on The World’s Worst Children book series. 9 Story animation studio Brown Bag Films will coproduce with U.K. prodco King Bert Productions.
