Deals: Films We Like, Wattpad, Black Fawn Films

A Cannes-winning drama and a Canadian thriller pick up domestic distribution, while Wattpad lands a development deal with a pan-regional streamer.

Films We Like

Toronto distribution boutique Films We Like has picked up the Canadian distribution rights to Karim Aïnouz’s Cannes-winning Brazilian feature The Invisible Life of Eurídice Gusmão (pictured). The film won the Un Certain Regard prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and it will have its North American premiere at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival under the Contemporary World Cinema program. It follows two sisters in Rio de Janeiro in the 1950s who each believe the other is far away, living their dream. Amazon Studios picked up the U.S. rights to the film.

Wattpad has signed a development deal with pan-regional streaming service Viu. The OTT service will gain access to Wattpad’s content library to produce original YA series for its range of markets. Viu is available in 17 markets across Asia, the Middle East and South Africa. Wattpad has already secured deals in Eastern regions with Huayi Brothers in South Korea and Times Bridge in India. The digital publisher also has a first-look deal with Sony Pictures Television.

Black Fawn Films

Guelph and Toronto-based Black Fawn Distribution has picked up the Canadian home video and digital rights for the thriller I’ll Take Your Dead. The feature is directed by Chad Archibald, who produced the film under his Black Fawn Films production banner alongside Cody Calahan and Christopher Giroux. It stars Aidan Devine as a man who disposes of bodies for local gangs until a woman (Jess Salgueiro) who is not quite dead lands on his doorstep. Breakthrough Entertainment’s Nat Abraham, Ira Levy, Michael McGuigan and Peter Williamson serve as executive producers. I’ll Take Your Dead is slated for Blu-ray/DVD and digital release on Sept. 17.
