Deals: Farpoint, Max Films, eOne

Farpoint Films' new factual series lands U.K. distribution, Netflix acquires an upcoming Jane Campion drama and The CW asks for more Burden of Truth.

Farpoint Films

U.K. distributor DCD Rights has picked up Farpoint Films’ The Day My Job Tried to Kill Me. The 13 x 60-minute factual series is scheduled to head into production in July in Manitoba. It tells real stories of employees who survived life-threatening workplace incidents. Farpoint’s Kyle Bornais serves as executive producer. DCD Rights represents programs for companies such as BBC Studios, UKTV and TLC.

Max Films

Netflix has picked up the worldwide rights to The Power of the Dog, produced by See-Saw Films, Big Shell Films and Quebec’s Max Films. The deal gives Netflix global rights, except for U.K. free TV held by BBC Films, which is backing the film alongside Brightstar. The film, written and directed by Jane Campion, stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Elisabeth Moss and follows two wealthy brothers at odds with one another in 20th century Montana. Producers on the film are Max Films’ Roger Frappier, Campion under her Bright Shell banner, See-Saw Films’ Emile Sherman and Iain Canning and Brightstar’s Tanya Seghatchian. The deal was negotiated through See-Saw Films’ in-house sales arm Cross City Farms.

Entertainment One

The CW has acquired the rights to season three of Burden of Truth (pictured). The series, starring Kristin Kreuk, was renewed by CBC in March and is slated to head into production in Winnipeg this summer. The CW is currently airing the series’ second season. The season two premiere saw a 50% viewership increase during its broadcast on CBC. Burden of Truth is produced by ICF Films, Entertainment One (eOne) and Eagle Vision.

eOne has also secured an exclusive, multi-year deal with L.A. production company Hypnotic, which produced series such as the Toronto-shot drama Suits and its spinoff Pearson. As part of the deal, eOne will serve as the studio for future projects from Hypnotic and will handle worldwide sales rights.
