Dark Cargo, a TV drama from eOne, Counterfeit Pictures and SEVEN24 Films, has received a pilot order from YouTube Premium.
Penned by Canadian writing duo Adam and Max Reid (Sneaky Pete), and exec produced by Ben Stiller and Nicky Weinstock’s Red Hour Productions, the project is described as a “high-octane, cliffhanger-driven, neo-noir thriller.” It follows protagonist Joe Dobbs, who, after a chance encounter with a disturbed stranger, is faced with a race against time, the police and other forces. eOne will serve as the studio. No additional details about the series were available at press time.
Toronto’s Counterfeit has produced a number of Canadian series including half-hour comedy Sunnyside, while Calgary’s SEVEN24 produces Wynonna Earp and the long-running CBC drama Heartland. Meanwhile, the Reid brothers are currently writing the pilot for Ice Cream Man, a new TV project for Universal Cable Productions and Good Fear.
The pilot greenlight comes six months after YouTube Premium, the platform’s subscription video service, launched in Canada. Other Canadian-produced series on Premium include the unscripted original, The Sidemen Show, which is produced by Blue Ant’s L.A.-based digital arm Blue Ant Digital Studios and its U.K.-based prodco Antenna Pictures. In addition, YouTube Premium also last year commissioned Furze World Wonders, produced by Toronto’s 9 Story Media.
