Thunderbird catches a new Netflix Beat

The Vancouver producer and its Atomic Cartoons division have joined the Beatles-themed series, made possible by a worldwide rights deal for the music.

Vancouver’s Thunderbird has boarded new animated Netflix series Beat Bugs as a coproducer.

The series, set to launch this summer, will be handled by Thunderbird and Atomic Cartoons, which it acquired in July 2015.

Beat Bugs – which combines Beatles songs recorded by the likes of Eddie Vedder, Pink, James Bay, Sia, The Shins, Of Monsters and Men, Chris Cornell, Regina Spektor, James Corden, and Birdy into the narrative of each episode – is a collaboration between Netflix, U.S- and Australia-based Grace: A Storytelling Company and Australia’s Beyond Screen Production.

The announcement follows the signing of a worldwide rights deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing, allowing covers of a Beatles song catalogue (the Lennon/McCartney “Northern Songs” catalogue) to be recorded for the production.

Beat Bugs is created by Grace’s Josh Wakely, who will also write, produce and direct. Among the songs included in the catalogue of songs are Help! All You Need Is Love, Come Together, Penny Lane, Yellow SubmarineLucy In the Sky with DiamondsSgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Magical Mystery Tour. Further announcements will be made regarding additional performers,
