Filming on the second season of Max & Shred is underway, with 13 new episodes being shot at Toronto’s Revival Studio.
Produced by Toronto’s Breakthrough Entertainment, the comedy’s first season followed the adventures of best friends Max Asher and Alvin “Shred” Ackerman. A celebrity snowboarder and a science boy-genius, respectively, the boys strike up an unlikely friendship when the two become roommates when Max moves to Colorado to train for the snowboarding Winter Cup.
Filming for the second season, tentatively scheduled to air this fall, began on April 20. The new season will, like the first, air on YTV Canada and Nickelodeon, and contain “meatier” storylines, says Jamie Piekarz, director of content, YTV, Treehouse, Nickelodeon Canada.
“The second season of the show was an obvious choice [for renewal] because the show was popular and there were still so many stories to tell,” Piekarz told Playback Daily.
The show is targeted at six-to-12-year-olds; within that, says Piekarz, the “sweet spot” is eight to 11. While the show was made initially to appeal mainly to boys, the viewership thus far has been split evenly between boys and girls.
With Nickelodeon and YTV involved throughout the production process, the show is made, to an extent, with an international audience in mind, says Joan Lambur, executive producer, Breakthrough Entertainment.
“I wouldn’t say it’s tailored specifically to international markets,” says Lambur, “but we try to make sure the themes and comedy is written in such a way that it appeals to kids everywhere.”
The show was well received globally and has been readied for a second season in a number of other territories including, Australia, Africa, Columbia, Italy, Russia, the U.K and Portugal.
The show is exec produced by George Doty IV (iCarly, Victorious, Drake & Josh), while exec producing for Breakthrough is Joan Lambur, Ira Levy, Peter Williamson, Nat Abraham and Michael McGuigan. Starring in the show are Johnny Gray as Max Asher, Jake Goodman as Alvin Ackerman, as well as Emilia McCarthy and Saara Chaudry.
