Discovery Canada orders first original scripted series

Newfoundland
Frontier, an adventure drama about the North American fur trade, is set to start production in Newfoundland this summer.

Discovery Canada has ordered its first original scripted series.

Frontier, from Take the Shot Productions, was created by Rob Blackie and Peter Blackie.

The adventure drama portrays the struggle for the control of power and wealth in North American fur trade in the late 18th century.

The series, to include six one-hour episodes, will be executive produced by Alex Patrick, John Vatcher and Perry Chafe, and will start shooting in St. John’s, Newfoundland in July 2015.

The deal was unveiled by Edwina Follows, director of commissioning and production at Discovery Networks Canada, which has turned to local scripted fare after doing well with factual series like Canada’s Worst Driver and Highway Thru Hell.

St. John’s-based Take the Shot is best known for its Republic of Doyle drama.
