Entrepreneurial film accelerator CineCoup has performed a coup of its own, nabbing DHX Media chairman Michael Hirsh for its board of directors.
A highly accomplished children’s entertainment entrepreneur and executive, Hirsh co-founded Nelvana in 1971, Cookie Jar in 2004 and joined DHX Media when it acquired Cookie Jar in 2012.
CineCoup, founded and led by J. Joly, is part film accelerator, part marketing boot camp, in which selected filmmakers participate in a CineCoup-led model of developing, marketing and financing their feature films while building a fan base for present and future projects.
Currently in Canada only, the company has confirmed it also plans to expand into the U.S. and into new verticals such as television.
Its first round was launched in 2013, with the Saskatchewan-based filmmaking team behind Wolfcop winning $1 million in production financing and a theatrical release through Cineplex.
Wolfcop is set to be released June 6 in Cineplex theatres.
In announcing Hirsh’s naming to the CineCoup board, the company also confirmed its plans to expand into the U.S. and new markets such as television.
