Seven new musicians named to CFC Slaight Music Residency

The Canadian Film Centre’s Slaight Family Music Lab has announced seven participants in the second year of its Slaight Music Residency.

This year’s composers are Erica Procunier, whose feature credits include And Now a Word from Our Sponsor; Rob Teehan, a 2010 Juno Award nominee who has scored for bands including The Lemon Bucket Orkestra and Heavyweights Brass Band; and duo Joseph Murray and Lodewijk Vos (Menalon), who have worked on projects for Google, MTV, Pepsi and 2013 TIFF short Portrait as a Random Act of Violence.

This year’s songwriters are singer/songwriter Adaline, who recently worked with Brendan Canning on the score for The Canyons; Robyn Dell’Unto, whose music has been featured in Degrassi and An Insignificant Harvey; and Matthew O’Halloran, co-founder of rock group The Corner.

The nine-month program, launched last September, encourages integration of music creators into onscreen production, and brings the residents together with industry business and technical professionals.

Mychael Danna, who recently won an Oscar for his composing work on Life of Pi, is on board again as the program’s composer chair.

The CFC said in a release that this year the program saw a notable increase in applications, which also resulted in a greater intake of participants. The inaugural program selected a total of four participants, and has this year increased to seven.

The CFC added that first year residents are experiencing career momentum out of the program. Inaugural composer and producer participant Todor Kobakov was recently tapped to co-score Bruce McDonald’s latest feature, The Husband, and will be composing for upcoming Space series Bitten.
