Mychael Danna wins Oscar for Life of Pi score

Besides Ben Affleck thanking Canada in his best picture acceptance speech for Argo at last night’s Academy Awards, Canadian nominees made their mark at the 85th annual awards in Los Angeles.

Toronto-based composer Mychael Danna won a best original score Oscar for Life of Pi, Ang Lee’s film adaptation of Yann Martel’s magic realism novel.

Danna in his acceptance speech called Life of Pi “a film that transcends culture, race and religion,” thanking “visionary captain” Lee who “guided a global cast and crew in the telling of this wonderful story.”

Danna, who is also the composer chair of the CFC’s Slaight Family Music Lab, in January also won a Golden Globe for best original score for the film.

Guillaume Rocheron of Vancouver’s The Moving Picture Company took a best visual effects award for Life of Pi (he was nominated with Bill Westenhofer, Erik-Jan De Boer and Donald R. Elliott for the film), while set decorator Jim Erickson of B.C. won a production design Oscar (with colleague Rick Carter) for Lincoln.

Canada’s foreign language film pick, War Witch from Montreal director Kim Nguyen, lost out to Michael Haneke’s Amour.

And in the short film category, Canadian nominees Yan England (director of Henry), producer Ariel Nasr (for Buzkashi Boys) and producer Mino Jarjoura (for Asad) saw the award go to Shawn Christensen’s Curfew.
