Bell Media Showrunner Bootcamp participants announced

The Canadian Film Centre and Bell Media announced Tuesday the three participants in the first Bell Media Showrunner Bootcamp.

A partnership between the CFC and Bell Media, the new initiative is designed to provide knowledge and management skills to experienced TV writers to put them on the track to becoming successful showrunners.

Among those selected was Toronto-based Shelley Eriksen, who most recently has written on Bomb Girls, Flashpoint and 18 to Life. She was also showrunner for romcom series Show Me Yours and is currently in development on one-hour drama Beauty Mark for CTV and Bell Media, and MOW The Jack Layton Story for CBC.

Vancouver-based writer and producer Daegan Fryklind was also chosen. Fryklind was most recently co-producer and writer on The Listener for CTV and Fox International, and head writer on Yukonic.  She has also worked on Being Erica, JPod and The Guard, and is currently in development on dramatic series Bitten, with Space, Bell Media and Vancouver’s No Equal Entertainment, and Time Out with CBC and Vancouver’s Lark Entertainment.

Also chosen was Dennis Heaton, who is currently the co-executive producer and head writer on HBO Canada and Audience Network’s Call Me Fitz, and has written for The Listener, JPod and Lionsgate feature film Fido. Heaton currently has four projects in active development – Majestic, with CTV, Bell Media and Vancouver’s Paperny Enteratinment, Undertaker with Shaw and Lark Productions, Primal with EBTV (the development banner for Brightlight Pictures and Essential Pictures) and Out of Touch with Paperny Entertainment.

Corrie Coe, SVP of independent production at Bell Media said in a statement that the initiative is an opportunity to support the next generation of great Canadian showrunners.

The two-week program begins Feb. 6, and will be followed by a week of sessions in L.A. starting Feb. 20.
