ION Television announced Tuesday that the network is picking up the fifth season of CTV cop drama Flashpoint, with 13 episodes on order.
Season four of the Toronto-shot series, following a group of police in the Strategic Response Unit, aired on CTV last summer and ION last fall. In June, CTV greenlit a fifth season, which goes into production in February.
The series premiered on the ION Television primetime sked in October, after the network acquired all Flashpoint episodes from seasons one to three, along with 11 fourth-season episodes. Its first three seasons aired on CBS, and four episodes of season four. Earlier in 2011, CBS and ION struck a complex syndication deal to air new episodes of the series; however, ION will be the exclusive U.S. broadcaster for season five.
According to ION, Flashpoint viewership on the U.S. channel peaked on Dec. 27, 2011, with 869,000 25- to-54-year-olds tuning in and 2.1 million total viewers.
Flashpoint’s fifth season will see writer Adam Barken on board as co-executive producer, working under co-creators and showrunners Mark Ellis and Stephanie Morgenstern.
Flashpoint is produced by Pink Sky Entertainment and Avamar Entertainment in association with CTV and ION Television. Anne Marie La Traverse and Bill Mustos executive-produce, and David Frazee is series consultant.
ION has also previously acquired Canadian series such as The Border, The Guard, and recently, The Listener.
Correction: The original version of this article incorrectly listed Adam Barken as “co-showrunner.” His title has been corrected, above.
