Crash Canyon goes international with MTV

Breakthrough Entertainment’s Crash Canyon is heading across the globe, as MTV snaps up the international broadcast rights for the prime-time animated series.

The series, which is slated to air on Teletoon Canada this fall, has been picked up on MTV’s 26 international channels, excluding North America, for a 2012 debut.

“We fell in love with Crash Canyon at an early stage in its development after seeing the calibre of the screenwriting, then the script development, and then in how the scripts naturally came to life in animated form,” David Booth, SVP of programming and content at Viacom International Media Networks, tells Playback Daily.

He adds that Crash spoke to MTV’s core audience, which he calls “’the millennial generation,” and reflects young viewers’ lives with its take on modern family.

Above all, he says, it’s “a smart and funny show. Animation is a key genre for our audience that we are committed to developing and building further.”

The series revolves around dynamics of a new family in a town at the foot of a canyon, and Breakthrough’s VP of distribution Nat Abraham says the show’s comedic chops have made Crash a strong seller.

The Crash team also includes The Simpsons co-executive producer Joel Cohen, producer/executive story editor Greg Lawrence (Kevin Spencer), writers Tim Long (The Simpsons) and Chuck Tatham (How I Met Your Mother, Arrested Development).

“It’s primetime in its edginess, and there’s no holding back on the style of the writing,” Abraham tells Playback Daily.

Which was more than fine with Booth, as he adds that it was a natural fit for MTV’s international network, given its history with edgy animated fare from Beavis + Butthead to Daria.

“This acquisition is part of our overall programming strategy of offering a broad mix of programs that reflect our audience’s young, amazing lives,” he says.

Crash Canyon is produced by Breakthrough Entertainment in association with the Shaw Rocket Fund and Teletoon Canada.
