DHX Media acquires Wildbrain

Canadian indie producer DHX Media has backed into U.S. TV production by acquiring Wildbrain Entertainment for $8 million in cash.

The deal, which includes a three-year earn-out, allows Halifax-based DHX Media to acquire the Los Angeles-based producer of The Ricky Gervais Show for HBO and Yo Gabba Gabba!, the Nickelodeon TV series and franchise, with 53 episodes already in the can and a live touring show ongoing in 60 cities from August.

Wildbrain president Michael Polis will continue to lead the TV producer and serve as executive vice president of branded entertainment and consumer products at DHX Media, spearheading international licensing activities.

“Wildbrain is a great fit for our business. DHX Media will… benefit from an LA-based studio with a strong creative and marketing track record and excellent US broadcaster relationships,” DHX Media topper Michael Donovan said in a statement.

Wildbrain had unaudited revenue of US$6.9 million for the first half of 2010, on the strength of its Yo Gabba Gabba! franchise, and net income of US$1.4 million, DHX Media reported.
