Smith joins D Films as CFO

Doug Smith has been tapped as chief financial officer for growing Toronto distributor D Films, effective immediately. The announcement was made Thursday by D Films’ president Jim Sherry and chair Darryl Iwai.

A 20-year industry veteran, Smith will manage the company’s finance, accounting and television licensing divisions.

He spent 10 years at the former Alliance Atlantis MPD (Motion Picture Distribution) where he oversaw sales and operational activities and was also responsible for the company’s representation of well-known primetime titles including the CSI-franchise, Survivor, and feature films such as The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Blair Witch Project.

For the past two years, Smith worked as a consultant to companies including Cineplex Entertainment, Corus Entertainment and Rogers Communications.

Upcoming D Films releases include the biopic Winnie, featuring Jennifer Hudson in the titular role, and the U.K. sci-fi drama Monsters. D Films is also the Canadian distributor for Emilio Estevez’s The Way and Andy De Emmony’s West is West – both of which will have their world premieres as gala presentations at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival.
