Aisha Porter-Christie plans to become a professional screenwriter and filmmaker, as well as an entrepreneur.
‘I hope to one day establish a production company in my home country of Jamaica to support the advancement of the region’s budding film and television industry,’ says the fourth-year Radio and Television Arts student, who graduates this spring with a specialty in screenwriting and independent production.
The 21-year-old has been the recipient of numerous awards and scholarships at Ryerson for her strong academic standing. Outside of university, Porter-Christie has worked as a production assistant for companies such as Tricon Films and Television and E1 Entertainment. She also mentors first-year students and members of the African-Canadian community, as well as teaching special-needs students.
After graduation, Porter-Christie will pursue a Masters degree in film in the U.S., and also plans to make short films.
James Nadler, assistant professor at Ryerson, says Porter-Christie is one of the best writers he has come across at the university.
‘Her work is a joy to read,’ says Nadler. ‘She has a beautiful, elegant style of writing and she is an excellent observer. Her writing has something to say and reflects her understanding of how people think and feel. Writing is a tough field to get into, but I don’t see her giving up, she will keep at it.’
