Based on a novel by George Ryga, Hungry Hills follows the story of a young ’50s-era orphan who returns to his hometown after a three-year stint in a boys home. Desperate to find his place in a community that persists in rejecting him, he finally finds himself at a violent crossroads.
‘There was a lot of ambition on the part of the writer and myself to tell this story,’ says director Rob King, ‘and we had 18 days to do it.’ Principal photography, which took place last May in Saskatchewan, was plagued with enormous rainstorms, hail and even snow. Despite this, ‘the look of the film turned out great,’ says King. ‘The weather became an added character that we hadn’t anticipated.’
Hungry Hills is one of the first Canadian features to be shot entirely with the Red One digital camera, which is capable of 4096 x 2304 resolution at a 16:9 aspect ratio.
