18 to Life adds producers

Producer Andrew Orenstein of Everybody Hates Chris and Malcolm in the Middle has joined the crew of 18 to Life, along with Corner Gas‘ Rob Sheridan.

Shooting on the first 12×30 season of the sitcom by Galafilm and Sound Venture started this week in Montreal, under directors Peter Wellington (Slings and Arrows), Paolo Barzman (The Last Templar) and Stefan Pleszczynski (Da Vinci’s Inquest).

The series, which got a full season nod from CBC in the spring, stars Stacey Farber (Degrassi: TNG) and Michael Seater (Life With Derek) as teen lovers whose sudden marriage forces their two, very different families upon each other.

It comes from exec producer/creator Derek Schreyer (Murdoch Mysteries) and Karen Troubetzkoy (15/Love), who previously worked with Galafilm on the teen tennis drama 15/Love.

‘As in all their work, they bring to 18 To Life passion, originality and unbounded creativity. I am enormously pleased that the show resonates with CBC, and, we hope, a large audience,’ said Galafilm CEO Arnie Gelbart in a statement.

The single-camera sitcom was also attached, for a short while, to ABC which partnered with the Ceeb on the pilot, though in the end the U.S. network passed on the series.

Orenstein, an Emmy nominee for his work on both Malcolm and 3rd Rock From the Sun, has since joined as executive producer. Rob Sheridan (Corner Gas, Less Than Kind) co-produces. Both came on board in May.

The cast is rounded out by Peter Keleghan (The Newsroom), Al Goulem (The Tournament), Ellen David (Surviving My Mother), Angela Asher (Degrassi: TNG), Jesse Rath and Tiio Horn.
