A story about a humble rickshaw driver has sped past two Quebec films featuring Roy Dupuis for the week ending Aug. 28, as Richie Mehta’s drama Amal topped the Canadian box office for domestic films in its third week for Seville Pictures.
The film, which expanded to Ottawa and Victoria on Friday, has made more than $112,000 since opening Aug. 8, for a strong per-screen average of $4,000. Amal will spread to suburbs in Vancouver and Toronto on Friday, with the number of theatres still to be confirmed.
Amal, from Toronto’s Poor Man’s Productions, has sold to over 10 territories including India, France, Spain and the Middle East.
Meanwhile, Christal Films’ black comedy Truffe and Alliance Vivafilm’s baseball drama Un été sans point ni coup sur (A No-Hit No-Run Summer) placed number two and three, respectively, on the domestic list. Both films feature Quebec star Roy Dupuis.
Kim Nguyen’s Truffe rang in just over $30,000 in its first week in 14 theaters while Un été, from director Francis Leclerc, has brought in nearly $800,000 in Quebec since its Aug. 1 release.
Rounding out the list is Vivafilm’s Les cas roberge, with a total box office take of $43,429 after two weeks in theaters, followed by comedy Cruising Bar 2 with $3.4 million after nine weeks.
