Willis to go Wild in Winnipeg

WINNIPEG — Call in the paparazzi.

Farpoint Films is in final negotiations with Hollywood starlets Rumer Willis (Hostage), Tania Raymonde (Lost) and Kristin Cavallari (Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County) to star in the teen sex comedy Wild Cherry.

The project is set to go to camera May 7 in Winnipeg, though producers are now looking to close a budget gap following the departure this week of coproducer Gavin Wilding of Vancouver’s Rampage Films.

But, given that all three young women have generated their fare share of tabloid fodder should help generate some buzz around the $2.5-million movie, says Farpoint producer Kyle Bornais.

‘You can’t open a celebrity magazine without seeing one of these three young female stars featured, so we consider it a real coup to get them all in one picture,’ says Bornais, who is producing with Toronto’s Byron Martin. Willis is the daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore and a rising actress, due to appear this summer in the comedy The House Bunny.

Wild Cherry is also slated to star Ryan Merriman (Home of the Giants) and include a cameo by Rob Schneider of Saturday Night Live fame, and, more recently, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry and 50 First Dates.

‘Throw in the comedy staple of Rob Schneider and this is a producer’s dream cast. Especially for a little feature written by a guy in Winnipeg,’ adds Bornais.

Wild Cherry — about a group of high school girls who make a pact not to lose their virginity before graduation — is the first feature scripted by Chris Charney of Farpoint. The director is Dana Lustig (Confessions of a Sociopathic Social Climber, Kill Me Later).

The storyline is very much in the vein of the American Pie franchise, but with a female twist, as the girls make the pact to tease and torment, and ultimately teach a lesson to the frisky boys on the football team.

‘It is fairly raunchy,’ says Bornais.

The film has caught the attention of well-known American comedy brand National Lampoon, which is distributing it in all territories outside of Canada.

The producers are now looking to close a final gap in the budget. Financing has otherwise been secured through L.A.-based exec producer Redwood Palms Pictures, a licence from Movie Central, Manitoba Film & Sound and provincial and federal tax credits. The location shoot wraps May 29.

Winnipeg-based Farpoint is also shooting another teen comedy, the 6 x 30 series House Party, which follows the chaos that ensues over a 12-hour period during a rowdy house party.

The $3-million Comedy Network series is directed by Kelly Makin (Kids in the Hall, Mickey Blue Eyes) and John Barnard (Gorilla Trap, Warriors: TKO) and written by Winnipeggers Sarah Constible and Matt Kippen.

Its cast includes Michal Grajewski (Falcon Beach), Dylan Taylor (The Jane Show), Grace Lynn Kung (Away from Her), Sarah Podemski (Cry of the Owl, The Border) and Matthew Edison (Billable Hours).

Brendon Sawatzky (Who Loves the Sun) of Winnipeg’s Inferno Pictures is coproducing. Shooting wraps April 25 at the Manitoba Production Centre soundstage.
