ReGenesis, History of Violence lead DGC noms

The second season of ReGenesis has topped the nominations for this year’s DGC Awards, taking six nods in total, including best television drama, best direction for Clement Virgo, and a number of technical categories, including production design and sound editing.

The Movie Network/Movie Central science drama leads both David Cronenberg’s A History of Violence, with five nominations in total, and Atom Egoyan’s Where the Truth Lies, with four.

Virgo is up for his work on the season’s fifth episode, ‘Massive Change.’ Other episodes earned noms for production designer Sandra Kybartas (‘Genie in a Bottle’), sound editors Joe Mancuso and Dan Sexton (‘Lethargica’) and picture editors Tom Joerin and Vesna Svilanovic, for ‘Wild & Innocent’ and ‘Fishy,’ respectively.

The Directors Guild of Canada and host Jeremy Podeswa announced the nominations in Toronto on Aug. 10, setting the stage for the awards on Oct. 14.

‘It’s important as guild members that we come together to celebrate one another’s achievements,’ said DGC president Alan Goluboff in a statement.

Cronenberg and Egoyan are both up for best feature directing – against Thom Fitzgerald for 3 Needles and Gary Yates for Niagara Motel. Longtime Cronenberg cohort Ronald Sanders, meanwhile, will go up against Truth’s Susan Shipton for best picture editing, while Violence’s production designer Carol Spier is also nom’ed along with Truth’s Phillip Barker.

The second run of Slings & Arrows also fared well, earning a best direction nom for Peter Wellington, production design for Kathleen Climie and picture editing on a TV series for Christopher Donaldson.

In a similar category – picture editing for an MOW or miniseries – Dean Soltys is nominated twice, for his work on Canada Russia 72 and again for Trudeau II: Maverick in the Making.

The DGC Awards are divided into two broad categories – craft awards, for the achievements of particular individuals, and team awards, which go to the film or TV production in general.

The awards show itself will be hosted by actor Peter Keleghan. It will present a lifetime achievement award to documentarian Allan King, who is celebrating 50 years in the business, and the guild’s distinguished service award to Crawford Hawkins, the head of its branch in B.C.
