It seems like only yesterday that the industry was preparing for Gemini boot camp, those three nights of fun and frolic that chronicle the race for the two-faced slab of victory known as a Gemini Award.
It’s not yesterday but a mere five months ago that the 1998 Geminis, Part 1, took place. This year’s Geminis, Part 2, marks a repositioning of the awards for the fall instead of the spring, timing more in keeping with the broadcasting season.
The lineup of most nominated shows is a diverse mixture of content as well as origin, with the smaller prodcos duking it out valiantly with their larger, public counterparts for most citations.
While Alliance scored the most nods, companies like Rhombus Media make it interesting, garnering (in a tie with Cinar) the next highest number of nominations, the bulk of which were earned for the gently winning ways of the Yo-Yo Ma Inspired by Bach.
On the Prix Gemeaux front, Omerta ii: la loi du silence leads a pack which represents a strong showing from independent producers in the dramatic series race between Omerta’s world of the mob and those based on high fashion (Diva), a dysfunctional family (Sous le signe du lion) and a songstress (Une Voix en or).
Omerta scored 15 nominations, and its producer, Productions sda, along with companies like Pixcom, Coscient and Sovimage collectively account for the majority of nominated shows.
Good luck, bonne chance.
