Avid Technology is adding a 1994 Scientific and Engineering Achievement Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for its Film Composer to the trophy collection which includes a pair of Emmys the company’s technology gleaned the previous year.
Volume shipment of Version 5.2 for Avid’s Media Composer and Film Composer digital non-linear editing systems – the upgrade includes AVR 27, enhanced realtime 2D dves, software-based multicamera editing, support for third-party Photoshop plug-ins and for Avid’s Media Reader option – began last month.
Avid finalized its merger with digital audio production software and system developer Digidesign this month. Menlo Park, Calif.-based Digidesign will operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Avid.
And on the tapeless broadcast front, Washington Fox stations were the first in North America to broadcast three separate simultaneous playlists using Avid’s Multichannel Airplay; Western Canada’s largest cable companies are among those receiving the different commercial streams.
Gun exemptions
Despite the film industry’s concern that proposed new federal gun legislation will take the bang out of Canadian film production, the Justice Department claims existing provisions of Bill C-17 will carry on and the film industry will continue to have exemptions as usual. A spokesperson for the Justice Department says these exemptions will be made clear when the new regulations are introduced in February.
