The Role:

The Director of Visual Development is an essential part of the Development Team, responsible for ensuring unique and compelling design for each of Spin Master Entertainment’s emerging properties. A wide scope and appreciation for various design sensibilities, an excellent repertoire with artists globally, an expert in design for animation, are all essential competencies of the role. This role oversees internal artists as well as the art direction with work-for hire studios.

The Director of Visual Development, along with their team, will work to develop strong looks that stand out in the kids’ entertainment landscape, that are also commercially viable and lend themselves to successful toy and branded properties.

What we can expect from you:

To lead the Look Development team in ensuring that SME developed shows have fresh, distinctive and commercial loo-approach of the highest standard
To work with the VP Entertainment and Creative Director, to fulfill and support the company’s vision of the property
You'll stay on the pulse of trends in kids’ content and family entertainment including and not limited to television, film, short form, publishing, toy etc.,
You'll ensure that the finished product reflects a unified conceptual approach to the project and is consistent with the highest standard production values
Exploration and presentation of the visual direction for characters, environments/sets, and props as a means to provide a roadmap during visual development, pre-production
To oversee the artistic staff and help cast appropriate talent within the department to ensure artistic goals are met
To work with external artists on a work for hire basis, guiding them to reach creative benchmarks
Leadership of work-for-hire-studios and their art department teams to ensure cohesive development and that studios are following creative guidelines as set out by SME
Assistance with the creation of concept art, character designs, visual development, background and animation reference, and technical support
Presentation of artistic material in art direction meetings, concept pitches, department launches, and creative reviews for crew, studio, and executives
To work in adherence to budget and schedule constraints while maintaining the show’s overall look and mood

Strong with graphic design, layout, and color theory
Extensive experience animation production (2D and 3D) and exceptional artistic skills
Proven digital and traditional abilities in design, painting, illustration
