In brief: Kari Skogland suits up for Marvel series

Plus: A Corus production exec shifts to a development role at Nelvana and The Northwoods finds its leads.

Canadian director Kari Skogland is set to direct Disney+’s upcoming six-part miniseries, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The show focuses on Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan, who play Sam Wilson (also known as “the Falcon”) and Bucky Barnes (or “the Winter Soldier”) in the Marvel cinematic universe, respectively. The miniseries is expected to launch in August 2020. Skogland’s most recent directing credits include The Loudest Voice in the Room and NOS4A2. Last year, Skogland was named Playback‘s Director of the Year. She also received a directing nod for her work on the drama series The Handmaid’s Tale at the 2019 Emmys. As announced this April, the Walt Disney Company’s streamer Disney+ will officially launch in the U.S. market on Nov. 12, 2019.

Nelvana appoints new development producer

Brandon HeadshotCorus Entertainment-owned animation studio Nelvana has hired Brandon Lane to serve as development producer on their growing kids content slate. Reporting to Nelvana’s head of development, Athena Georgaklis, Lane will oversee properties currently in development and produce training programs for in-house creatives. Lane previously worked as production executive at Corus Kids, working on shows such as Cupcake & Dino: General Services, Esme & Roy, Hotel Transylvania: The Series and Inspector Gadget. Before that, he served as development executive and associate creative producer at 9 Story Media Group.

The Northwoods unveils cast

The Northwoods, an upcoming Canada/Norway copro from Film Mode Entertainment, levelFILM and Handmade Films in Norwegian Woods has cast Sarah Gadon (Alias Grace) and Eili Harboe (Thelma) as its leads. Written and directed by Emma Higgins, the thriller follows two sisters who return home for the first time since their mother’s passing. When the two decide to go on a trek of the Norwegian fjords, their guide disappears. The Northwoods marks Higgins’ debut feature and will be shot in Canada and Norway. Producers on the project include levelFILM’s Dave Hudakoc, Einar Loftesnes from Handmade Films in Norwegian Woods, Daniel Quinn, Jeff Pangman and Evan Landry. Alcina Pictures’ Paul Barkin and Film Mode Entertainment’s Clay Epstein serve as exec producers. Additionally, 2017 saw Barkin, Pangman and Hudakoc take part in the Ontario Creates 12th annual International Financing Forum (IFF) at TIFF with the film.

The Northwoods was recently introduced to buyers at Cannes by Film Mode Entertainment, which represents the feature internationally. Both Film Mode Entertainment and CAA Media Finance handle the U.S. rights to the film, while levelFILM is responsible for its Canadian distribution and SF Studios holds its Scandinavian rights.
