Shaftesbury acquires remake rights to Japanese TV format

Weather UnsplashToronto prodco Shaftesbury has acquired the remake rights to the Japanese TV format The Weather Girl Knows.

The property, originally from Japanese network TV Asahi, is a quirky procedural about the pairing of a weather girl and a rookie detective, who use the weather and real-world science to unlock the truth behind puzzling crimes. The show aired in Japan for one season in 2013.

Shaftesbury optioned the rights in partnership with Toronto’s WexWorks Media and will shop the series to buyers at MIPTV. WexWorks is a prodco helmed by Matthew Wexler, a former executive producer at Spin Master Entertainment.

The property fits nicely in Shaftesbury’s wheelhouse, with Christina Jennings’ prodco also producing a number of other projects with a scientific bent. Among those is the STEM series Emerald Code, as well as Murdoch Mysteries and Frankie Drake Mysteries, which also feature elements of science and technology.
